LEGO Batman License

LFan,

I was curious to hear the current status on the Lego Batman license. There don’t appear to be any related sets on the horizon, nor have I seen any news regarding a sequel to the video game. Did the sets not perform well? Did the licensing agreement expire? Are there talks for future DC sets (Green Lantern, JLA, etc.)?

Thanks in advance and keep up the good work,
Kyle

Dear Kyle,

The curious thing about the LEGO Batman license was that the video game was released after the last group of sets sold out.  Many Batman sets were discounted so they would sell.  The video game created a large demand for the sets and figures.  Prices are extremely high in the secondary market.  It is unclear whether this license has ended or if TLG is choosing not to exercise the license and make new sets.

The LEGO Group will not discuss plans for future products including licensed properties.  Some fans are interested in the potential Disney purchase of Marvel.  TLG currently has a license for Disney lines such as Toy Story, Cars, and Prince of Persia.  Creating a new license utilizing the Marvel superheroes may be a logical step in the future.

Sincerely,

LFan

Even as a huge Batman fan (and a huge LEGO fan), I was disappointed by the Batman sets. I didn’t buy any of them. In my eyes, the biggest fault was the anachronistic design choices — mostly inspired by the 80’s Batman from the comics and the Tim Burton movies.

Why not use any of the current iterations of Batman? There are certainly plenty to choose from. 🙂
